I'm told this will affect the performance of your car... how often do they need to be changed? Is Iridium the way to go?

Plugs definetely affect your performance. If you have dirty plugs you will get bad detenation and lose power. I would get the plugs changed once a year.......at least. If you drive harder like I do....and put lots of mileage on......like I do......I would get them changed more often. And honestly you do not have to buy the most expensive plugs out there. Just shop around....and see what other 1zz/2zz drivers use.

The plugs on the Vibes/Matrix's are already Iridium, if yours aren't Jackie I would suggest switching to them.

From what I remember you have to gap them first (the new ones) then get he other ones out involves a wrench...but I remember whatever you do don't break the top part of the plug very bad.

Get it as part of a tune up package and give htem the plugs, this way your car gets the once over and new plugs installed...it's what I always did.

My friend Warren says to change them about every 80,000kms.
I think I will go with the Denso Iridium Spark Plugs.

How many km's do you have? If you do have iridium plugs, maybe all you need is a little maintenance -- brush off carbon build-up and check the gap. You need a sparkplug wrench, a gap tool (it's like a folding pocket-knife with different thicknesses of metal), and a stiff brush. Be very careful NOT to cross-thread the plug threads on the engine block!

So now you have IRidium plugs? How'd you find out?

well i don't know about the base and xr models, but i know that the 2zz engines have the iridium spark plugs. and just like the factory headers, they are about the best you can get stock. so it would be silly to change them out on the 2zz. not sure about the 1zz.

Yup, you're right the 2zz does have iridium spark plugs so there's no need to change it until 192000km; all you need to do is take them out every 20000-50000km to clean them that's it. You can also check the manual it should say there.

Does the base 1zz engine have iradium plugs, or is it just plain old crud ones? Heck, I pulled off my engine cover a while ago and couldn't even find the plugs. I think there are the things on top, the plastic with wires attached to the top of the block. Arethose them, or am I crazy?
