There's an excellent review on Salon about the extended ROTK DVDs. I had already bought it for Greg for Christmas, but I haven't been disappointed with either the FOTR or TT extended versions either, and I'm not a Hobbit Head or anything like that (haven't ever read the books, in fact). This is going to be a weird Christmas because for the past three years Greg and I have gone to a late showing of one of the three movies on Christmas Eve (pagans that we are), and we've got nothing to go see this year. But, as the article comments, "If there's a better antidote to holiday tensions than a marathon session with all three DVDs and your parents' new widescreen TV, it's probably illegal." We're just going to have to start an LOTR marathon that night instead, finishing it off on Boxing Day (when we open the presents) with ROTK!

I downloaded the Extented version of Return of the King a few weeks ago. 4 hours and 10 minutes to watch. I had to take 2 breaks to get through it. But totally worth it!
I do admit, i'm a big fan of LOTRs, so the extended is the only version I will watch. I've read the books, even the lost tales, and history of middle earth. So, I need the movies to be more complete.
ANyway, if you dont' care about the books, then watch the theatrical version, if you want to hang with the book worms, extented version all the way!
