autocross!

it was a beautiful day (but chilly) out at the tracks. lots and lots of fun!

it seems like you're going so much faster in the car, but then looking at vids later.... my first run was super slow (obviously i wanted to learn the course). didn't end as well as i'd hoped, but from 57 s to 47.1 sec (timed). then ran a few fun runs (after the actual timed events) and hit 2 46.2 runs. given another day, or a few more runs, pretty confident i'd have been in the 44's. i added my pics to the album, but sorry, my pics are resized, so they are much smaller.

Well, we went out and ran Solo II autocross today with the Porche Club. It was much more laid back and more chaotic than SCCA but still a good time. i think it was the largest group that ever attended one of their events so they were a bit unprepared. 32 cars total but then some had to leave early since it took them awhile to get us up and running.

Phil did fantastic and beat me once again. i think he ran pretty much almost perfectly each time. =) i've come to the conclusion that i pretty much suck at this. i'm either going too fast and lose it or i go too slow. guess that's what this is all about, having fun and improving as we go. i had tons of fun and this time, pushed myself much harder than last weekend, i took out a cone my first run (happened to be my best time of the day), then second run was going too fast and skidded past the cones I needed to go into so i was off course. the third one, it had just rained and i wanted to kinda take it slow since the course was quite slick. my last run.... well let's just say i had A LOT of fun. they gave me credit for 3 cones (2 of which took a trip with me til the staging area) but i'm told it was more like 6 cones... it was the entire corner 1 i took out.

ok, i guess you can't really read the times too well.

phil was pretty consistent in the 54's. his best time was the 3rd run 54.071. my best run was the first with 56.765 (with +1 for hitting a cone)

You are still getting pretty good times. Phil is only beating you by a second or two. That is not bad at all Hope!

i think my problem is that i have too much power that i don't know quite how to control it yet. there was a guy in a stock focus albeit suspension and he gets some of the best times at each event. it's not necessarily about power, but about making sure you do it as accurately and efficiently as possible.

Oh of course! More power does not make you a better driver.

oh, phil is definitely the better driver. but that's also why i wanted to do autocross. i already know i suck at driving my car. i'm not as familiar with it nor can i handle it all that fantastic. i figure this is a great way to learn.

You probably learned more about handling your car in that autocross session then you did for 10 years of driving.

I know I learned more about my bike and how to drive it in one hour at the track then I did just burning around the city.
